Spring Break Trip!

Our family was so excited to head to Washington DC for the first part of Alex's Spring Break this year!  Alex was an incredible traveler.  He was patient and helpful.  He sat nicely on the plane and was content to read books and watch a movie!  Our flight out was uneventful and enjoyable.  As we started the decent down to DC, Alex was mesmerized by the sights out the window.  As we got close, he kept saying, "Mom, we are definitely going to land on the water!"  Since it was dark out we could easily see the Capitol and the Washington Monument as we landed.  So cool.  And, we didn't land on the water!

Steph was our fabulous hostess and we had so much fun hanging out with her!  Since this was our third trip to DC, she suggested we head out of town for part of our trip.  We decided to go to Williamsburg, VA.  On the way out of town, we decided to stop by Mount Vernon, since Alex has been studying about George Washington at school.  After a long, long, winter in Minnesota, we were so thrilled to be outside enjoying some beautiful weather in Virginia.  On this day, it was sunny, mid-60's, and felt just about perfect.  We explored the beautiful grounds of Mount Vernon, which sits on 800 acres over looking the Potomac River.

It was interesting and a little surreal to visit the location of George Washington's tomb just down the road from his home.

Alex was very interested in all of the buildings around the grounds, which were restored to what they would have looked like around 1799, which was the year that George Washington died.  It was awesome to see Alex so engaged with the whole experience, and he wanted to see everything!  He even got to pose for a picture with Mrs. Washington!

Before we left, we got in for a tour of Washington's home (Alex calls it the mansion!)  I have to say that this was really amazing to think of George Washington actually roaming those halls and making decisions that led to the founding of our country.  They had his original office chair, where it is thought that he sat during his presidency.

This was such a great way to begin our trip!!  After leaving Mount Vernon, we got on the road to Williamsburg.  Once on the road we decided we were hungry, so we stopped at Chick-fil-a for some lunch (it's hard to believe, but it was my first time eating there!!) Yum!

Once we got to Williamsburg, we checked into our hotel and headed over to play a little mini-golf!  Alex loves to play mini-golf any chance he can get, so he was beyond thrilled.  Steph and I watched while Joe and Alex took to the course!  But, first they had to pose with their scary pirate faces!

After a super fun day, we all were ready to crash at the hotel!  We were looking forward to the next day's adventure to Colonial Williamsburg....
