Flurry of Activity

School has only been out for 19 days and we've already had lots of summer adventures!  But, before I get ahead of myself, there were a bunch of fun things in the last week of school that kept Alex (and us!) busy!

As I've mentioned before, Alex wrote a 10 chapter book!!  His class read a series of books with the main character of a pet pig named Mercy Watson.  All of the students then wrote their own story using Mercy as the main character.  Alex's book was called "Mercy Watson Adopts a Dog".  It was hard work, but Alex put together a wonderful story.  One of the funny things about Mercy is that her favorite food is hot buttered toast with a great deal of butter!  So, Alex's class invited all the parents to a Mercy Watson book reading and served... hot buttered toast (with a great deal of butter!)  Another cool thing is that the actual author of the Mercy Watson books, Kate DiCamillo, is a friend of Alex's teacher and she graciously signed each student's book.  Pretty cool!

Even though it rained SO much this Spring and they had to reschedule once, we did get a beautiful afternoon for track and field day!  It was fun to watch all of the kids run around and have fun together!  One of the highlights of the day was the tug of war.  Alex's teacher is a slight bit competitive and her class tends to win each year... and this year was no exception.  The kids had fun winning the 1st grade tug of war!

One of the last big events just before school ended, was the Red Riding Hood Authors Tea.  The students had written a book with their own version of Red Riding Hood as well as a book of poetry, an All About Me book, and a few other fun projects that they shared with the parents.  All of the kids wore red and as a class they made a cool mural (which you can see behind the class picture).  Whew... Alex's teacher is known around school as the "Project Queen" and at times, it was quite exhausting for the kids (and their parents) to get everything done, but it was very cool to see all that the kids we able to accomplish by the end of the year.

As I've said before... Alex was so blessed with a wonderful teacher this year, who put her heart and soul into her classroom.  She created so many opportunities for special and memorable moments this year for the students, which I think they will remember for a long time to come.  Alex told me that his teacher was the best teacher in the world!!
