On the way home...

After saying goodbye to Grandpa Vargas one last time, we got back on the road and started heading home.  But, to break up the trip a little, we made a few stops on the way.  First stop was Mount Rushmore.  Alex was pretty excited to stop here, and in between rain bursts we got a few pictures in front of the Presidents.

The next stop was the Badlands National Park.  This was another stop that Joe and I did on our first road trip and it was one we always talk about when reminiscing about that trip.  If you are ever on Interstate 90 in western South Dakota, it's definitely worth taking an hour to drive through on the loop.  The scenery is beautiful and it's amazing how the landscape can change so quickly.  We saw quite a bit of wildlife too, including some wild turkeys, lots of birds, antelope, and a mountain goat!

After spending the night in an Inn in Murdo, SD, where we ordered pizza and swam in the pool, we made one last touristy stop at the Mitchell Corn Palace.  The outside of the building is decorated with corn, and while not super exciting, it was a good place to stretch our legs and eat a popcorn snack!

All in all we had a very good trip!  It's a good sign when we were discussing where we might want to take a road trip next year, even after being in the van for many, many hours!  Any suggestions for good road trip destinations??
