Our trip to the Library tonight, came with some unexpected nostalgia... As I looked through the racks of picture books for some that I thought Alex would like to read, titles and pictures popped out at me and I was brought quickly back to my own childhood and my love of children's books. You see, my mom worked at the Library for much of my elementary school years, and about once a week she would bring home a new stack of books from the library (remember the books stacked next to the microwave, Mom and Bon?) We were pretty lucky to have access to so many books all the time, and thus, we read A LOT!
Both of my parents instilled a love for books in us kids. I remember some treasured times of my mom reading A Wrinkle in Time (which, for the record, may still be my all time favorite book) and my dad reading Treasure Island. (The Black Spot.) Later, my Children's Lit class in college, was one of my favorites. I got to read children's books and get credit for it!
Joe and I have found that Alex loves reading too. Sometimes on a weekend, we have been known to sit and read books for an hour (a pretty long span for a 3 year old.) He might read through his Highlights magazines, cover to cover 4 or 5 times a day! And truth be told, I love it! I love it almost as much as I did when I was a kid, maybe more, because, I love that Alex loves books. I think I could read Goodnight Moon and Into the Woods 100 times (which I may be close!) There's just something wonderful about a well written and thoughtful children's book. It brings me such joy to share books with my sweet boy. And, I love when that sweet nostalgia, sneaks up on me when I least expect it...it reminds me of who I am and where I've come from.
I remember! I am so glad Alex loves books! Ma

ReplyDeleteI too loved taking Children's Lit when I was in college, it was great to reread some of those classic books for kids. Now I get to read my favorites to my classroom and to Claire, what fun. Keep up the good reading habits Alex!
